The Rajkó Orchestra's six and a half decades of success are a singular accomplishment in the Hungarian cultural world. The ensemble has trained thousands of Roma children to be musicians, while also preserving the traditions of Gypsy music and building bridges between this heritage and those of classical music, Hungarian folk music, operetta and other entertaining musical genres. In the course of doing so, it has worked with outstanding figures from Hungary's cultural scene. This concert reflects both the Rajkó Orchestra's versatility when it comes to genre and the richness of its artistic relationships. The first work to be performed pays tribute to Gyula Farkas - who founded the ensemble and led it to global fame. Appearing at the concert will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including the most recent winner of the Virtuosos television talent search programme. The first part of the evening will be closely tied to the repertoire of traditional Gypsy music, which is expanded with new colours and new content in each production. The second part will pay tribute to the greatest figures of Hungarian music, Liszt, Bartók and Kódály, with refined arrangements of their works.
