One of the fundamental problems of the Christian faith is that of damnation and transfiguration, which also became one of the most important themes in art from the Romantic period, as well as in the lives of the Romantic artists themselves. Ever since Goethe's Faust and Mozart's Don Giovanni, damnation had been conceived of as a moral punishment according to the norms of the era. Tchaikovsky's Francesca da Rimini brings to life a section of The Divine Comedy, in which the adulterous France...sca relates the story of how she fell in love with Paolo, and her husband's vengeance. The conductor guides the listener through hell, where the lovers' punishment of drifting in an eternal whirlwind is portrayed in a finalé of sweeping grandeur by the full orchestra.
The struggle between the two main characters in the fairy-tale drama of Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, the diabolical Koschei and the Firebird, who symbolises purity, comes to a climax to the sound of apotheosis in one of the most gripping finales in music history.
Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 2 is linked to the theme of the concert in two ways: firstly, the theme from Stravinsky's aforementioned finale appears in the work, and secondly, the work occupies a unique spot in Bartók's life: unlike the other two pieces, its closing movement - motor-like, dramatic, and in places diabolically powerful - contains no opportunity for resolution or transfiguration: this would be left to Bartók's later works. Roman Rabinovich, the concert's soloist and winner of the 2008 Arthur Rubinstein Competition, has already appeared several times in Hungary with the orchestra. Zsolt Juhász has created a new choreography for Stravinsky's work, the fairy tale nature of which the Duna Art Ensemble's dance troupe will present through a fusion of folk and modern dance elements.
