Last year's Choral Celebration proved it: choral music is truly fascinating and has countless faces. This concert, at which the cream of the crop of the choral music world are making their Budapest débuts, attempts to give a taste of these, with something worth looking at for everybody: spiritual life, African music of primal power and the exhilarating sounds of the Balkans, as well as the gentle beauty of Scandinavian folk traditions. The first half of the programme will introduce choruse...s of international calibre that the audience can cheer for in the Grand Prix competition taking place as part of the Choral Celebration on July 11 and 12. Admission is free of charge for both the Grand Prix and the workshops.
Alti e Bassi is a unique Italian chorus. Its members sing without instrumental accompaniment, but with their voices and a microphone are nevertheless capable of mimicking any instrument, whether it be a drum, a bass guitar or a horn. Gema Swara Pesona conjures up an inimitable south-east Asian atmosphere in the concert hall, while one of the primary aims of the Stockholm Singers is to nurture and present the choral music repertoire spanning all the way from the Renaissance to the present day. The Southern Chorale is Georgia Southern University's chorus, made up of of the university's most talented student musicians. The chorus' repertoire embraces the entire musical literature, but they are also right at home with spirituals, gospel and barbershop vocal harmony. The Jazzchor Freiburg earned its international standing through numerous victories at competitions, touring the world as the winner of the German National Choir Competition and the 2002 Choir Olympics. Its superb vocal technique and imaginative arrangements have made the vocal ensemble the undisputed king of choral jazz music.
The second part of the concert will feature a performance of Luis Bacalov's Misa Tango. This work adorns the words of the Mass with the rhythm and melodies of South American tango.
