This is a production that was an overwhelming success in the leading concert venues of the United States and Europe. These two quartets, who otherwise operate in very different musical spheres, were able to grasp something very significant in closely tying together Béla Bartók's music with the folk music from which he drew. The result was a programme that has the precision of a musicology lesson yet is nonetheless enjoyable throughout. The connection between the music of Bartók - duos, str...ing quartets and dance adaptations with their peasant influences - and the original folk songs and instrumental folk music is revealed here with a hitherto unheard-of intensity. The unabated success of the production is thanks in large part to the world-class artistry of the musicians and the fact that they have been studying for decades this genre of music they are now introducing to the world.
Celebrating the fortieth year of its foundation in 2015, the world-famous Takács Quartet is considered to be among the finest interpreters of Bartók's work. Alongside the two founders, both former students of the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy, the ensemble is now led by a British principle, while Geraldine Walther on viola spent nearly three decades with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra before joining the quartet in 2005. The Kossuth Prize-winning Muzsikás, which turned 40 in 2013, has played a pioneering role in promoting the performance of Hungarian folk music as an independent genre of equal standing to all others, but the combination and playing of 20th century Hungary classical music and traditional folk music is practically its speciality. Their collaborator here is Moldovan Csango folk singer and ceramic artist Mária Petrás, who won the Prima Primissima in 2013 and is one of the few people who have actually visited the pure source of Bartók's inspiration.
