When ten-time Grammy Award-winner Arturo Sandoval first took the stage at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in February 2015, the air was aglow. The Latin jazz legend showed many sides of his impressive musicality, superior technical skills and exceptionally entertaining nature. This time, he'll be arriving with a new septet, with only Tiki Pasillas on percussion instruments remaining unchanged from the old line-up. In addition to the sweeping rhythms, the approaching holidays also mean he will have some true Christmas favourites for us to enjoy.

The concert can hardly dispense with references to his great predecessors, especially the figure of Dizzy Gillespie, as it is to him above all that Sandoval owes his brilliant career. His first Hungarian appearance was in the landmark year of 1977, when he was touring with the band Irakere, which also included Paquito D'Rivera and Chucho Valdés. This was when he met Diz, who embraced Sandoval as he fled communist Cuba and eventually settled in America. In addition to the Grammy statuettes ...and Billboard and Emmy awards, the most important distinction won by this artist longing for freedom, who was sentenced to three months in prison after being caught listening to the Voice of America Jazz Hour during his military service, is the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which Barack Obama hung around his neck on a blue ribbon in 2013. He can boast more than thirty records, as well as ballet and film music and a film presenting the story of his life. At the age of 72, he travels the world with undiminished energy. Since his last visit here, he's also released two more albums: Ultimate Duets! features the favourite songs of eleven singers, including Plácido Domingo and Stevie Wonder, while Christmas at Notre Dame illuminates the side of him of which this evening will be providing a taste as well.

Lexus is the the key sponsor of the Jazz Legends programme.
