For the series dubbed "My Silks” - Divas from Around the World, launched in May 2015, Bea Palya invites 'fairies of song” and 'musical Amazons” to whom she 'owes her life,” and who have 'caressed, cradled or awoken her from bad dreams” to perform in joint concerts. Each evening, the audience will hear two performances, one from Palya and the other from her guest, along with a duet or two to allow their silks to truly intertwine both symbolically and in reality. In inviting her current gues...t, Palya promises more of the same.
Born in Cuba to parents from Cape Verde, Mayra Andrade grew up in Senegal, Angola and Germany as her family followed her diplomat stepfather from posting to posting. Although she returned to Santiago aged 14, she left three years later for Paris, where she settled down permanently. That is also where she started to sing and, as a sort of teenage star at age 16, won a song-writing competition in Canada. The dominant influence in her career was Orlando Pantera, who passed away in 2001, but not before encouraging her yearning to create "something different” from what she had heard before in her music. Between 2005 and 2014, Mayra released with four albums (Navega, Storia Storia, Studio 105 and Lovely Difficult), of which the latter finds her spreading her wings the widest. Not only did she amaze her listeners by finding space for everything from Cape Verdean melodies to bossa nova and pop, and from chanson to reggae and jazz, but also by matching her stylistic diversity with her uniquely profound intimacy. As Bea Palya puts it: "It's hard not to fall in love with her.”
