An entire day of pulsating music for all ages. Beginning in the morning and running late into the evening, this one-day series of concerts gives a flavour of the remarkably colourful world of percussion music – from the 18th century to the modern day, from classical to jazz, from Mexico and the United States to the Europe of days long gone. In addition to popular works of the kind that always bring the house down, such as Orff’s Carmina Burana, and epoch–defining works like Bartók’s Sonata for t...wo pianos and percussion, the audience can expect to hear joyous improvisation from international stars, including Gary Burton, Chick Corea, the Tambuco Percussion Ensemble and Percussion. Choosing which of the seven concerts to attend may prove to be a difficult task, so we suggest you simply move into the Palace of Arts for the day. The legendary duo owes its existence to a fluke. Over three decades ago, the organizers of a German jazz festival requested all participants to join forces in a jam session, a finale for the event. Only two musicians agreed to do so, and Burton and Corea found themselves on stage in each other’s company. The overwhelming success of their performance encouraged them to record an album together. “When Crystal Silence came out, there was a freshness about it that was so beautifully captured by the title, the gorgeous photo on the cover and everything that was included in the tunes and the improvising and general conception of the music,” wrote Pat Metheny thirty-five years later.
