Fado is the musical representation of the Portuguese soul. The queen of the 19th century style was Amalia Rodrigues, who died in 1999. Studying her songs and following in her footsteps on her path to success has been Dulce Pontes, one of the greatest stars of the genre today. We know her well, as she made her Müpa Budapest debut in 2014, but now she is coming with a fresh album that returns to traditional fado after several detours, and her backing band also employs some big instrumental guns of the genre - including guitarist Luis Guerreiro.

Fado is an urban folk music, a projection of the soul of the Portuguese people, with resignation and hopelessness, but also an expression of the possibility of longing and happiness. At the heart of this bittersweet and melancholic/nostalgic genre is the singing, and Dulce Pontes is one of its most sensitive interpreters. The breakthrough for this songwriter who was first known as an actress came at the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest, where she represented Portugal with great success. Although she... later ventured forth in the direction of pop music, she found her true vocation when the influence of Rodrigues emerged in her own songs, and she soon became one of the new stars of fado. She has gained a great international reputation on the world music scene with a number of superb albums and with collaborators such as Ennio Morricone. Despite "flirting” with other genres like tango and flamenco lately, at the end of 2021, after four years of silence, Pontes is releasing a new record to return to the pure style of fado. It is with these fresh songs that she is coming to us, but in addition to the new compositions, of course, she will also perform her well-known hits, accompanied by her outstanding band.
