On 12 March 2013, after a gap of nearly 19 years, the most successful band in Hungarian progressive rock history took to the stage once again to a packed house in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall at the Palace of Arts in Budapest. That evening, a grey weekday in late winter turned into a day of celebration, at least for the audience and the musicians of EAST. It was as if only a few years had passed since the release of the albums Játékok (Games) and Hűség (Faith), and yet it had been... more than three decades. That concert might well be looked back on one day as a memorable moment in the rebirth of progressive rock.
Almost from the outset, EAST harboured a dream: How would this music sound with the accompaniment of a symphony orchestra? If you listen carefully to EAST's albums, with just a little musical imagination you can already make out the strings, woodwinds, brass, bells and timpani.
Shared dreams exist, we yearn for something vital, and the dream now comes true for the band and its audience, perhaps at the very last hour before waking. This joint concert by EAST and the MR Symphonics will still feature EAST's progressive sounds, but with richer musical colours, sometimes sharper contrasts and greater transparency, greater volume in the loud parts, and an even greater sense of solitude in those beautiful, hopelessly lonely quieter moments.
The two-hour concert will again embrace almost all EAST's back catalogue. Material from their most successful first album Játékok (1981) and six tracks from Hűség (1982) will be performed as a suite. The remainder of the concert will feature the best tracks and excerpts from the albums A szerelem sivataga (Desert of Love, 1987), Taking the Wheel (1991) and Radio Babel (1994).
