Müpa Budapest's fourth Babel Evening provides fresh evidence that boundaries are constructed for us to rise above them. To a height where canonised and alternative culture, "high” and popular art productions become neatly organised in a clearly visible whole. On this occasion, we take a bird's eye view of the culture of a half-imagined, half-real locality. Its name is Falupest, and it is famed for its inexhaustible resources. Here, both folk tradition and vibrant urban existence provide in...spiration.
For example, the Luca Széki production by the L1 Contemporary Dance Ensemble led by Márta Ladjánszki, was inspired by the densely pleated felt skirt from Szék in Transylvania, giving a new meaning to the mythology of the twirl in folk dance. The work of Hungarian jazz legend Mihály Dudás Dresch is also testament to the fact that no chasms exist between the local and the global, between current and timeless values. For him, the childhood impact of folk music from the Great Hungarian Plain provided an experience just as defining as the later influence of Afro-American jazz. A man who has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years, Balázs Szabó likewise discovered the magic of folk music at village weddings, which played a no less defining role in the development of his own sound than sung poems, gospel, world and pop music. His path took him from Tetétlen to Budapest, sampling theatrical life in Debrecen, Kecskemét and Pécs along the way, so it is safe to say that his career is something of a gesamtkunstwerk in itself. The splendid short stories and novels of Krisztián Grecsó, Szabó's frequent collaborator and a key figure in contemporary literature, also tell us that a rural identity can still be preserved in the capital city; moreover, that the intention and the actual homecoming are actually one and the same…
