Fanfara Complexa started life as a dance house band in 2002, and since then has been enthusiastically representing rhythmic dance music in Hungary based on Moldavian Csángó, Romanian and Gypsy melodies, which also take on a Balkan tone. Their authentic Moldavian Csángó music is complemented with new Romanian melodies and Serbian, Bulgarian, Turkish and Jewish folklore traditions, and the instrumental music with saxophones, accordion, cobza and drums is real dance music in its most ancient function.
Fanfara Complexa, now nearly 20 years old, evokes the somewhat eclectic wedding and ball atmosphere of a rural world that seems to in decline, adding a beneficial blend of different cultures. Their songs and arrangements are mainly based on authentic Moldavian Csángó folk music, as well as on the new style of Moldavian Romanian genres, such as serba, hora and manele melodies. After dance halls and clubs in Budapest and the countryside, the band is also now at home in concert halls, but its main ...aim is to recreate the atmosphere of village bands. To this end, they regularly seek out Moldovan environments to study and collect songs, play music and follow the folk music of the region, which is constantly changing and renewing itself as a living process. They learned their repertoire primarily from local musicians, but they also drew on the growing number of tunes available online. In their performance, the dynamic, tightly rhythmic music of the Moldavian part of Romania, which is still alive today and draws on the folklore traditions of several nations (Romanian, Hungarian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Turkish, Jewish), is presented according to a unique arrangement and conception. They have released two albums to date, Radio Populart in 2011, followed in 2016 by Tánc alá (For Dancing), the title of which says it all.
