The now traditional season-opening concert cavalcade of Jazz 0820 promises a richer musical experience than ever before. On the anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian state, performers embracing the most noble and popular jazz traditions appear as usual before audiences from 5 pm onwards on both the Open-Air Main Stage and inside in the Banner Square and Glass Hall. On this occasion, moreover, not two but three bands will take to the outside stage. First up will be the winner of th...e audience prize at this year's Jazz Showcase, the Kálmán Oláh Jr. Quartet, followed by a band of experienced "old foxes” of jazz in Bopcorn, a special new formation led by Tamás Berdisz. The basic trio will be joined by three trombonists from three different generations: doyenne of Hungarian jazz trombone Károly Friedrich, popular Jazz 0820 host Béla Szalóky, and 21-year-old talent Mátyás Papp, presenting arrangements of well-known jazz standards as you've never heard them before. The always unmissable Police Big Band play from 8 pm until the celebratory fireworks, before continuing afterwards in front of the terrace of the Ludwig Museum, to the delight of those in the mood for a dance.
The "freestyle” branch of jazz is represented on the Banner Square and in the Glass Hall in the form of a jam session featuring the Áron Tálas Trio and the Márió Rafael Trio, freely joined by four soloists: Eszter Munkácsy, Gábor Subicz, Árpád Dennert and Gergely Varga. Depending on how things work out, ad hoc groups of as many as seven members will be heard performing evergreen jazz melodies on one stage or the other.
