In the mid-1970s the musical fusion of Western jazz and Indian classical music was by no means as widespread as it is today. Shakti, the original group led by guitarist John McLaughlin which functioned for a short period between 1975 and 1977, was just as revolutionary because it blended the Northern and Southern Indian styles. In the late 1990s, McLaughlin and tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain put together a new line-up with the same concept as the original – and met with the same huge success. The ...new incarnation also features singer Shankar Mahadevan, mandolin player U. Shrinivas and percussionist V. Selvaganesh. Presented by: Palace of Arts
