For Maarja Nuut, Estonian folk music from the first half of the 20th century holds the same importance as cutting-edge musical technology. And just as tradition intertwines with modernity, so music, storytelling and dance blend into one in her concerts. As Nuut says, her music 'hides within itself the possibility of travelling from one reality to another, of visiting the kinds of places where anything can happen. I can precisely recall moments where my dreams were completely lifelike. At such a time, reality and make-believe become confused, and you can decide which direction you want to go in. You're far away and very present at the same time.'
Hypnotic, mystic, psychedelic, experimental, trance-like, intimate, melancholy - these are just some of the adjectives critics have attributed to the concerts of Maarja Nuut. They may be somewhat contradictory, yet we have no reason to question them. That is the essence of Nuut: we can expect an unusually moving concert that defies all attempts at categorisation.
