Kanada Káosz, one of the most original DJs on the Hungarian underground scene, decided in 2007 to revive the best Hungarian and foreign rock music of the 1960s and ’70s by gathering together a group of musicians receptive to the music of thirty years ago. The Qualitons were thus founded in 2008, recalling the name of a famous Hungarian post-war record label (Qualiton). Their influences are many, from Atlantisz, Bergendy and Skorpió to Sun Ra and Fela Kuti, or Kati Kovács, who they wasted no time... in hooking up with on a joint project. The latter toured the country to great acclaim, contributing to Kovács’s comeback after a long hiatus. While a number of groups abroad have already successfully recreated the atmosphere of rock’s golden age in a modern guise, the Qualitons are pioneers in Hungary in their chosen genre. The members of the group began as jazz musicians and their music would more than hold its own at any international festival. Indeed it looks likely to do so now that one of its tunes, entitled Mellbimbó (Nipple), has already been picked up by the renowned Japanese DJ Muro. Although the band’s music is obviously dance-oriented, it will aim to put together a set list for the Müpa concert that will captivate a concert hall audience. Listeners can thus expect to relax in their seats to a combination of laid-back tunes, jazz and unpredictable psychedelia, courtesy of some unusual instruments such as the sitar and cimbalom. Adding to the spectacle, Viktor Vicsek has created a remarkable video installation especially for this concert. Presented by the Palace of Arts
