A Kossuth Prize and an Oscar are just two of the awards collected by world-famous Hungarian folk singer Márta Sebestyén. Singing in 30 languages - particularly the music of Balkan and Mediterranean people - she has bridged vast cultural and geographical divides to win plaudits all over the world. It makes little difference whether she performs with Muzsikás, the Gryllus brothers, Mátyás Bolya or in other productions, the Budapest concert season would be inconceivable without her. «Bridges» pro...ject brings together the folk music of Hungary and Greece, and it is a natural progression of Sebestyén' s work to date. It says much about the music that Márta is flanked on one side by Kálmán Balogh, the cimbalom master and absolute star of the world music genre in Hungary. The concert perfectly illustrating the objective of constructing a bridge between the music of Csango and the Epirus people - with the pentatonic scale providing a firm foundation. Elsewhere, the Hungarian traditions of the táncház (dance hall) meet with the Zonaradiko dance originating in Thrace. The musical journey follows the path of the legendary Prince Cantemir down as far as the Bosphorus, at the point where two continents meet. Sofia Labropoulou has set up an excellent orchestra consisting of great greek soloists (apart from the indisputable master of cimbalom - Kálmán Balogh), so as to beautifully present the wealth of all of these rich musical traditions. Most of the Greek musicians participated in the Ensemble that presented the project “Bridges” in its successful première in Thessaloniki.
