STOP!
- Just for a minute.
See! - What the eyes are blind to see:
The ribbon in national colours, carried in hearts.
It guards the ancient blood swallowed in the earth,
It was shed for you, too; it yearns for peace.
And it believes in the hope of a better future.
Rip up the prison of your soul, and look at
The loyal hearts embraced in the Carpathians,
Just for a minute.
Stop!
HUNGARIAN
(Poem by Sándor Vér)
.../>
"New year, bringer of good cheer, it's starting anew, its renewal starts to proclaim cheer and joy...”
Almost everyone can hear this song playing in their ears, reiterating the belief that it is vital to celebrate renewal in the initial days of the new year and to reinforce what is good, since joy breeds more joy, and riches breed more riches. For audiences and artists alike, preserving, understanding and experiencing our riches, our cultural heritage and the legacy of our ancestors is a noble task. Let this be the pledge of keeping our faith and retaining our Hungarian identity.
Portrayed as a "tree of life” growing on the stage are the year itself and the dramatic customs, dances, songs and the magic of everyday life linked to its first few days, with special emphasis going to the qualities of masculinity and femininity, their unity, and the force sustaining the family. One of the Hungarian people's most archaic folk customs is the carolling tradition of regölés, a ritual intended to ensure bounty and fertility - with people delivering greetings from house to house, a throwback to the winter solstices of pagan times. We'll get to know the dramatic borica playing of the Csango ethnic group in the Hétfalu region near Brassó (Brașov), which was the first test for youths on the path to adulthood. We'll show how our ancestors recalled how Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding at Cana, his first miracle, on the second Sunday after the Epiphany with singing associated with feasting and drinking. First on the stage will be the festive tradition of tikverőzés (symbolic "hen-beating”) still practised in Fejér County, and the evening will culminate in a massive and lively dance performance from carnival season and its anticipation of the arrival of spring.
In addition to these, we'll be presenting numerous predictions of bounty and good fortune for the year ahead, as well as others related to weather and romance. With all of these come our best wishes for good health and physical, intellectual and spiritual flourishing for the year 2017! (Tamás Kunos)
