The band Nigun was born under a lucky constellation; in the twelve years of its existence so far, it has always managed to persuade the perfect guests to take part in its musical collaborations, those who speak the same language down to the last syllable, who help the group bring their imagined musical worlds to life and to unlock the rooms “which only open to the sound of song”. On their 2006 record Bale Kulturnik, the members of Nigun were joined by the saxophonist Daniel Zamir, and a year la...ter by another saxophonist, Matt Darriau, at a concert in the Festival Theatre. In 2010, Darriau and the trumpeter Steven Bernstein collaborated with the band. All these musicians stand at the intersection between (mainly Eastern European) Jewish music and jazz. Early in his career, many people were surprised that the African-American clarinettist Don Byron turned toward klezmer and Jewish musical traditions, although his authentic approach to the music, thorough a solid technical grounding and astonishing instrumental skill, quickly transformed surprise into appreciation among critics. The Bronx-born Byron has made important and substantial excursions into the realms of avant-garde jazz, post-bop and even rock music, his cooperation with the band Living Colour being one example of the latter. His virtuosity is never employed as a mere end in itself, but always placed in the service of the musical concept he has designated or undertaken. A dialogue of kindred spirits thus lies in prospect at this Jazz Workshop concert, with pieces from Nigun’s latest album serving as the basic theme of the dialogue, while the show will be rounded out by a selection of Byron’s own compositions.
