Arturo Sandoval was born on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba in 1949. Initially self-taught, he believes the trumpet to have the strongest personality among all instruments, capable of producing sounds from the quietest whisper to the loudest shrill. Among the giants of the trumpet his role model was Dizzy Gillespie, a pioneer of Latin jazz whom he first met in 1977, and who immediately took him under his wing. In 1990, Sandoval decided he would not return to Cuba. The United States not only adopte...d him, but launched him skywards: he received the Presidental Medal of Freedom from President Obama in 2013, adding to the 10 Grammy Awards and 19 further nominations he has earned so far, as well as six Billboard and one Emmy Award. At his red-hot concerts Sandoval never forgets his one-time mentor Gillespie, nor his own musical roots.
