Hungary is the cradle of the clarinet-like tárogató. Almost simultaneously at the end of the 19th century, two outstanding Hungarian instrument makers, Vencel József Schunda and János Stowasser, patented instruments they had developed themselves under the name of the tárogató. Around 100 years later, the tárogató was saved from sinking slowly into oblivion in Hungary as more and more active musicians began to rediscover the instrument's full, warm-toned sound for themselves. Today our leading in...strument makers, in cooperation with our best musicians, are working together to perfect the instrument. Just how far they have progressed in this noble task will become clear at the World-Wide festival. The concert will showcase folk music, historical works and jazz alike, as our finest musicians introduce us to the extraordinary sounds and moods of the tárogató. The instrument's forerunners - the Turkish pipe and the clarinet - will also make an appearance, along with another 19th century invention in the shape of the saxophone.
