The members of the Fonó Ensemble, representatives of the second generation of Hungary’s “dance house” new wave in folk music, always endeavour to uncover dimensions in the music hidden to the layman’s eye, colours and moods that take shape within the strict boundaries of given styles. Although the ensemble’s range of sounds takes shape through the authentic performance of folk music traditions, it endeavours elsewhere to approach a variety of other (not merely musical) genres. Its Barbe Bleue pr...oject with the French opera company Ensemble Justiniana falls into this category, as does its album Túlparton, compiled from Bartók’s works and their archetypes in folk music. The urge to explore or display the connections between approaches and genres also motivated the group in shaping the concept of its latest album Vadbarokk. The basic concept for the album arose from the realization that, besides the endlessly analyzed influence of folk music on composed music, an opposing process has also shaped the world of music for centuries. In the late Baroque period on the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary, instrumental ensembles of strings, woodwinds and harpsichord in the world of composed music of the time adopted folk traditions, leading to the creation of ensembles based on strings, sometimes with woodwinds or with the cimbalom replacing the harpsichord, taking over the task of providing instrumental music in villages. The Vadbarokk project is now presented in concert on stage at the Palace of Arts. Early music ensemble Musica Profana helps demonstrate the parallels, while the values that survived through the adoption of traditional elements in the ornamentation, instrumental practice and sometimes even the melodies of Baroque music appear through the instrumental and vocal folk music interpretations of the Fonó Ensemble.
