The work of Junior Prima Prize-winning composer András Gábor Virágh has so far comprised a uniquely toned opera and a preponderance of works for solo instruments or chamber ensembles, but at this concert we will hear the world première of a work for full orchestra commissioned by the Academy of Music.
During his "years of pilgrimage” in Italy, Franz Liszt visited Pisa in 1838. In the city's cemetery, he saw the monumental frescoes which Giotto's pupils began to paint. A work attributed to ...Buonamico Buffalmacco, The Triumph of Death, immediately captured his imagination, leading to the germination of a plan for a piano concerto that would take the melody of the Gregorian Dies Irae as its main motif.
In his short lifetime, Franz Schubert never received the attention or recognition which his talent and impressive body of work should have deserved. He never heard worthy performances of his symphonies, and the Symphony No. 9 never at all, as the masterpiece he completed shortly before his death was judged by the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna to be too long and difficult. The score was unearthed a decade later by Robert Schumann when he visited Schubert's brother. In this work, the composer bids farewell to the classical symphony, and lays the groundwork for the Romantic symphonic style. This is what Schumann himself also sensed when he spoke of the work's "heavenly length”.
