“Debussy’s career was long, and each phase of it can be characterised differently. I have tried to shed light on these differences through six varying concert programmes,” says Zoltán Kocsis of his initiative to mark the 150th anniversary of the French composer’s birth. In the third evening of the six-part series running throughout the 2012/13 season, the music is accompanied by dance and by the poetry of Stéphane Mallarmé, exploiting the helpful influences various disciplines of the arts have ...on one another. The items on the programme are closely linked, so that the individual “movements” form a genuine symphony of the arts, breaking from the customary ritual of concert performance and placing the music in the context of the audience’s knowledge and learning in other areas of the arts. The point of contact on this occasion is Debussy’s close friend, the poet and critic Mallarmé, whose Tuesday afternoon salon of the arts was a gathering place for Parisian intellectuals. The collaboration of Mallarmé and Debussy produced the most musical works of literature by one and the most poetic pieces of music from the other. An example of the latter is the orchestral work Prélude à l'après-midi d’un faune, which opened up new vistas in symphonic music. The programme is completed with works by Ravel similarly connected to Mallarmé, as well as dance and documents from music history.
