Béla Bartók National Concert Hall

Conductor:

Gergely Dubóczky

Featuring:

the Medical Orchestra of Semmelweis University
  • Liszt: Les Préludes
  •
  • Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D major ("Titan”)

The Medical Orchestra of Semmelweis University - this year marks the 250th anniversary of the school's foundation - was formed eleven years ago and has been led by artistic director and conductor Gergely Dubóczky since 2009. Its members are primarily students from the medical school, as well as from other Hungarian institutions of higher education. What is remarkable about this performance of Mahler's symphony is the fact that it will involve the participation of students from the university's international partner institutions as well. The Medical Orchestra regularly takes part in the university's events, and has also made successful appearances in Bayreuth, in Switzerland and at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music here in Budapest. Its benefit concerts are aimed at supporting Hungary's health facilities.

In recent years the orchestra has given highly successful benefit concerts at the Liszt Academy, dedicating the entire ticket revenues from the performances to the Pediatrics Clinic No. 1 in 2017 and to the Hungarian Pediatric Ambulance Service Foundation in 2018. They have found yet another noble cause for this year's effort: all the revenues from the benefit concert will go to constructing a children's playground for the Pediatrics Clinic No. 1 and comprehensively renovating its inner co...urtyard.
Dubóczky is the only member of the generation of Hungarian conductors now in their 30s to have worked with Zoltán Kocsis, Iván Fischer and Ádám Fischer. At Iván Fischer's invitation, he has served as an assistant conductor with the Budapest Festival Orchestra since 2014. In 2016, he took first prize at the Atlantic Coast Conducting Competition in Portugal, which was followed in 2017 by an invitation to the Menuhin Festival's conducting course in Gstaad. He has been the conductor of the Alba Regia Symphony Orchestra since 2018. Over the past ten years, he has conducted at such prestigious events as the Maribor Festival, CAFe Budapest and the Budapest Spring Festival.
