If you want to get know the soul of Portugal, there could be no better guide than fado, the country's national music. 'Everything that is sad, / All of that is fado” - the essential queen of fado, Amália Rodrigues, who passed away in 1999, once sang. Carolina Cardoso Rodrigues, who was born in 1984, grew up with her songs, and identified with her so strongly that she was once asked to portray Amália in a play. At the same time, she was convinced that when it came to making a record, it would be better to perform Amália's songs in a completely new format.
One particular example sprang to mind: how the Spanish singer Rosalía had reinterpreted flamenco with the help of producer Raül Refree. So Lina spoke to Raül... Refree wasn't particularly familiar with the traditions of fado, but had no intention of looking backwards. In the studio he simply relied on the brilliance of Lina's singing. Though he initially accompanied her on guitar, he soon realised it would sound far more authentic if he played piano and an analogue synthesizer. While the lyrics ...and melody of the songs have been left untouched, the songs have been completely refreshed. You could say that it is fado for the 21st century, but with the same 'old spirit': 'everything that is sad.' There has been no comparable sensation on the fado scene for many a year. It was no surprise that their album Lina_Raül Refree soared to the top of world music radio station playlists upon its release. Whatever way you look at it, this is a first class production.
