Budapest Wagner Days 2026

4-30 June 2026

A double helping of the Ring to mark a double anniversary: we are celebrating two significant Wagnerian milestones at the Budapest Wagner Festival in 2026. It has been 150 years since the entire Ring tetralogy was first heard at the Bayreuth Festival – and with a Hungarian, János Richter, conducting – and visitors to the festival at Müpa Budapest have been enjoying the incomparable atmosphere of Hungary’s Wagner fiesta for 20 years.

The Budapest Wagner Days launched in 2006 with a performance of Parsifal, so it is no coincidence that the work will open the anniversary event two decades later – and with an all-star cast to boot. For the monumental undertaking of The Ring of the Nibelung – once again performed according to Hartmut Schörghofer’s excellent direction – an era also comes to an end, as this will be the last time Ádám Fischer conducts the Ring cycle at Müpa. As usual, the most celebrated opera stars, from Tomasz Konieczny to Magdalena Anna Hofmann and Jürgen Sacher, will take their turns on the stage. Last but not least, the enchanting Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund will select from tunes by Wagner, Richard Strauss, Berg, Dvořák and Jean Sibelius alongside one of the world’s most outstanding piano accompanists, Helmut Deutsch.

A sip of Wagner

Sip on some Wagner! Throughout the entire Budapest Wagner Days festivals, we attempt to appeal to all of the senses, and this year you can’t miss our line of craft beers whose unique flavours are inspired by characters from the Ring. The Szent András Brewery’s craft beers can be tasted in four flavours, in bottled and draft versions. These beverages bearing the Budapest Wagner Days label can be purchased at Müpa Budapest’s snack bars, and you can even take all characters home in a gift box.

  • Brünnhilde: a decidedly hoppy and pleasantly spicy New England IPA flavoured with apricots and basil (5.6%)

  • Hagen: a high extract content imperial pilsner with a strong hoppy flavour (7%)

  • Siegmund: an unfiltered Belgian wheat beer with Seville orange peel and refrshing coriander (6s%)

  • Freia: pastry ale with apple, ground Ugandan vanilla and cinnamon (4,2%)

Valhalla Cocktail Bar

Divine Nectars for Earthly Mortals

It is only right for heavenly music to be accompanied by earthly pleasures: this year, we’ve concocted a special surprise for cocktail lovers too. Sample our Wagner-inspired cocktail creations at the Valhalla Cocktail Bar located opposite the entrance to the Festival Theatre. The selection will be mixed for you by Antal Kiss, a world championship bronze medallist and European champion bartender.

Opening hours:
Our bar opens 90 minutes before the performance and closes at the end of the second interval.

Choose a cocktail to match your mood, or try each of them in turn.

Das Rheingold
Follow Wotan and the rest of the gods across the rainbow bridge into Valhalla: an uplifting experience when the world order has just been thoroughly shaken up. This truly colourful cocktail is best stirred, not shaken, though – so we can promise all will end well.

Die Walküre
Never before have a family feud and emotional breakdown tasted so sweet! This fresh summer drink is as bittersweet as Siegmund and Sieglinde’s love, symbolised by two cherries, and its warm colours evoke passion and Brünnhilde’s ring of fire.

Siegfried
A powerful yet refreshing cocktail for born heroes. In this fresh nectar of the forest, dragon fruit symbolizes the vanquished monster, its heart pierced by a miniature Notung. Imbibe two of them and you might suddenly understand what the birds are chirping about, just like Siegfried.

Götterdämmerung
A gloriously ripe and deep-toned libation that conveys the purple of dusk, with smoked citrus peel reminiscent of a blazing Valhalla, and a Valkyrie galloping into the inferno. Sipping on one of these will help you come to terms with the fact this is your last time watching Ádám Fischer conduct the Ring here at Müpa Budapest.

Parsifal
Even if we can’t serve up the Holy Grail, we can still deliver a moment of enlightenment with this fantastically fresh, not to mention non-alcoholic, mocktail evoking the heroic knight. Because we know that the Wagner Days experience can be intoxicating enough all on its own.

Flavours of the Wagner Days

During the Budapest Wagner Days on 5, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 and 30 June, the attractive counter of the ground-floor Atrium snack bar is offering meat and vegan options, while the Bohém Event Venue will also be serving up delectable dishes to opera enthusiasts. During the intervals of the performances of Parsifal, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung on the dates listed, you can take your pick from the restaurant’s exclusive dinner selection as well as enjoying a complimentary mini cake made according to the family recipe of Daphne Wagner served up alongside a reinvigorating coffee. Those seeking further sweet treats will find that the selections at the snack bars and P'Art Café and Bistro have been expanded to include two additional heavenly desserts exclusively available from 5 to 30 June.

If you wish to try out our dishes created for the Budapest Wagner Days, you once again have the option of reserving a table at the Bohém Event Venue.

Wagner Installation

The well-known, iconic installation of Budapest Wagner Days is returning to Müpa. The original visual element, created as part of the strategic partnership between Müpa and MOME (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) was based on the concept of graphic design student Dániel Dublecz. The ropes connecting the two-meter-high metal letters reflect the colors and forms of the event series’ award-winning visual identity, which was developed using sound-analysis software.

Through the partnership between Müpa Budapest and the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, which provides an exceptional environment and the required technology for education and research in the applied arts, young designers have gained an opportunity to demonstrate their talent. In the spring of 2019, the university offered its graphic design students a course aimed at creating concepts linked to Müpa Budapest's communications and artistic positioning that would inspire visitors to return.

Feel free to take photos and video of the installation, and use the #BudapestiWagnerNapok hashtag to be featured on Müpa Budapest's online social media platforms!
