Aziza Brahim was born in a refugee camp in the Algerian province of Tindouf in 1976, where her mother had escaped the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara. Her father stayed in Laâyoune, where he later died without Aziza ever meeting him. She lived in the refugee camp until she was 11, before travelling to Cuba on a scholarship. When she could not hget funding for her musical studies, she returned to the camp in 1995 and eventually settled in Spain in 2000. It was there that her musical c...areer blossomed, first when she toured with the bands Leyoud and Yayabo, then in Gulili Mankoo, a formation she founded in 2007. It was with this ensemble that she released her album entitled Mabruk, on the back of which she was invited to the WOMAD festival. The real breakthrough, however, came with this year's album Soutak, which topped the charts of European world music radio stations for three months with its magical mix of desert blues, Latin American songs and contemporary pop music. Soutak translates as 'Your Voice' in English and expresses, in the words of Brahim, 'the most personal of emotions, those that have been silenced in Western Sahara'.
The intimidation of singers as a result of the civil war in northern Mali two years ago prompted Brahim to raise her voice, one that is more than powerful enough to reach even those people unmoved by the 'dessert winds'. Here we have a singer-songwriter arriving at the Palace of Arts who forges a magical union of Latin American songs, desert blues and contemporary pop music.
