Carmina Burana

The most exciting event for the general audience at the Budapest International Choir Competition is the grand prize competition, where the best choirs in the different categories test their skill against each other. Prior to the grand prize competition, we will hear a performance of Carl Orff's popular Carmina Burana incorporating the Budapest Academic Choral Society.

It is no accident that Carmina Burana is considered one of the most popular works in the choral literature: its melodies penetrate to the heart and transport us to a dream of the past. Timeless music that captures the changing world. The most characteristic feature of Orff's work is the primitive set of melodies, the powerful dynamics and the magical repetition of motifs - and these evoke the pulsation, intoxicating spell and primal and erotic passion of ancient tribal singing accompanied by drums. Carmina Burana has no plot. Instead it focuses on the force that drives the world: the joy of life. The work is about love, coming of age, youth, and the experience of the renewal of nature.
