The Prelude and Fugue in E-flat major is one of Bach's lengthiest works for organ, celebrated for its fugue with three themes. Sandwiched in between the two movements at this concert will be a movingly beautiful Easter chorale prelude by the same composer. During his very short life, Julius Reubke was a pupil of Franz Liszt. Very few of his works survive, but those that do testify to an accomplished and talented composer. His grandiose Sonata in C minor strongly reflects the influence of h...is master, and in terms of its quality, is worthy of mention in the same breath as Liszt's Sonata in B minor and Ad nos, ad salutarem undam. Mozart's Fantasia in F minor was originally written not for organ but for a mechanical apparatus named an Orgelwalze. It is one of several such surviving compositions by Mozart, who did not write any original works for organ and whose music is thus only heard in transcription on the instrument. Jehan Alain was an extraordinarily creative composer of the first half of the 20th century. In addition to his French contemporaries, his music was greatly influenced by the melodies and rhythms of the Far East, a taste of which we can appreciate here in his Deuxième fantaisie.
The two closing pieces of the concert are genuine curiosities as orchestral works which have been transcribed for organ by Ágoston Gedai. Their unusual flavour is provided by the means which the performer chooses to imitate the sound of a symphony orchestra. Gedai utilises the instrument's broad range of technical possibilities to find new forms of expression, thus presenting an idiosyncratic aspect of the organ.
