Balázs Havasi: Brush and Piano – Munkácsy Memorial Concert
A musical tribute to the Hungarian painter genius – World Premiere
2 April 2012 Monday
6 pm - 7:45 pm
Béla Bartók National Concert Hall

Balázs Havasi will appear on stage at Béla Bartók National Concert Hall for the first time this evening, and he is preparing a special program – a world premiere – for this special venue. The pianist-composer, who has admired Mihály Munkácsy’s paintings since childhood, composed twelve movements inspired by the Munkácsy’s works or the moments of his life over recent years. The result is an extraordinary musical production: a modern, 21st century salute to one of the greatest Hungarian artists of all time during which the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok, the works of Munkácsy – to appear projected on giant screens – and the meticulously planned, theater-like stage adaptation will all help to evoke the painter’s ethos from a perspective of 150 years. The production presents an encounter of the fine arts and music with the premiere of twelve brand new pieces of music, the perfect digital visual installation of one hundred paintings and works by Munkácsy, multimedia projection technology and prose interpreted by renowned actors. History, Hungarian patriotism, heroes, dedication and love will all appear in the music, prose and in the world famous paintings. The production will set off on an international tour after the premiere. Few contemporary composers are given the opportunity to present their music to masses. Due to his personality, unique musical language and extraordinary impact made on audiences, Balázs Havasi is in a privileged situation as millions of people have become familiar with his work in a relatively short period. He has in the past composed for symphonic orchestras, choirs, string ensembles as well as drums and piano. With his various musical projects, he is able to captivate audiences of elegant concert halls, theatres, sports arenas or summer festivals alike. He is constantly expanding and pushing the—often artificially defined—boundaries of musical genres and styles. He has written for Everything But The Girl vocalist, Tracey Thorn and has also given a lecture at the TED Global conference on his music innovation efforts. Ten of his recordings have gone platinum.
