Beethoven is eternal: around the world, it is his compositions that are played at the most concerts. That singular symphony about human greatness and, in the second movement, heroic death, is also his work. Similarly prominent in the list of violin concertos written throughout history is his contribution to the genre in D major, which combines the merits of all of its predecessors while also establishing a model for all subsequent composers. The MÁV Symphony Orchestra's guest artist this evening is Maxim Vengerov, whose playing has mesmerised listeners all over the world.
Beethoven's Third (‘Eroica') symphony "is a hymn to heroism and heroic behaviour,” wrote music historian Dénes Bartha. Enthusiastic about the cause of freedom and revolutionary ideas, Beethoven was inspired to write the work by the personality of Napoleon Bonaparte. He composed a symphony whose monumentality is worthy of the triumph of the French Revolution. However, when it turned out that Napoleon, who had been fighting for freedom, had crowned himself emperor, the composer tore up... the first page of the score with its dedication to the French ruler and changed the title to ‘Sinfonia Eroica - Heroic symphony composed to celebrate the memory of a great man'.
The genre of the violin concerto was created by Torelli in the 17th century, and since then every major composer has composed a violin concerto, but there is only one work that combined the merits of its predecessors and showed the way forward to the composers who came after it: this is Beethoven's Violin Concerto. The evening's guest soloist is the world-famous Maxim Vengerov, an heir to the legendary Russian violin school whose unique playing style is greatly admired by the Hungarian audience as well. Conducting the concert will be Gábor Takács-Nagy, who gained world fame as a violinist and used this experience to develop his skills with the baton with extraordinary self-control. His international success proves that he chose the right path.
