„The role has been a magnet for many great sopranos — Ponselle, Milanov, Callas, Sutherland, to name a few — and after last night Radvanovksy can add her name to the list,” is how the Huffington Post compared Sondra Radvanovsky's début in the title role of Bellini's romantic opera the greatest portrayals ever. One of the foremost performers in the bel canto style, the American-Canadian soprano has a voice and temperament that are perfectly suited to the character. Her output in the Metropolitan Opera's 2015/16 season was also incredible in terms of quantity - portraying the queen in all three of Donizetti's "Tudor” operas - a bravura performance never before attempted in the 140-year history of the world-renowned institution. This performance to open the New York opera house's 2017/18 season features another world star in the role of Adalgisa: portraying the rival to the high priestess will be Joyce DiDonato. For lovers of bel canto, having two artists of this calibre sharing the stage will be a true cause for celebration. And as if this were not enough, it will be the enchanting voice of Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja singing the part of Norma's faithless husband, Pollio. Conductor Carlo Ricci, whose knowledge of Italian Romantic opera is second to none, was born in Milan and made his début at the Met in 1993, at the age of 33. David McVicar's evocative production, true to the composer's original intentions, is set in the druids' sacred grove, the realm of nature and ancient rituals.
