Conductor: Iván Fischer Around the turn of 1807/1808 Beethoven began to work on a new symphony in which he would express his feelings about nature. It was premiered in Vienna alongside the Symphony no. 5 and Beethoven described the other work as “Pastoral Symphony: rather the expression of moods than scene painting.” The Symphony no. 4 was written in 1806 and is a striking counterpoint to the weighty, dramatic third symphony. Its light cheerful mood is closer to that of the second symphony.... Music historians have pondered if this might not have something to do with the composer’s relationship with Teresa Brunswick. Beethoven dedicated the symphony to its commissioner, Count Oppersdorf, and it was premiered in Prince Lobkowitz’s Viennese palace in March 1807.
