The "Unfinished” symphony is the most frequently played fragment in the musical repertoire. Schubert began composing the work in 1822. The manuscript was initially lost and only emerged in 1865, long after Schubert‘s death, when the two completed movements were premièred. Various opinions have emerged regarding the incompleteness of the work. For a time it was thought that Schubert did not intend to finish it as he felt it was sufficiently rounded as it is. This is contradicted by th...e fact that he did actually begin to compose a third movement, reaching the mid-section of the Scherzo. Several attempts were subsequently made to finish this movement based on surviving sketches, firstly by Felix Weingartner, but these completions never took root in concert halls.
The other work featured this evening is likewise incomplete. The Symphony in D minor is Bruckner‘s final symphony; the composer began work on it in the summer of 1887, after completing the first version of his eighth symphony. A slow worker at the best of times, the composer was delayed in this task by his parallel revision of three earlier symphonies, as well as by the obligation to fulfil two composing commissions. He was working on the last movement of the ninth symphony up until his death in October 1896, but did not manage to complete the score. According to his doctor, Bruckner said not long before his death that he had dedicated one symphony each to two earthly monarchs - King Ludwig of Bavaria and the Emperor Franz Joseph - and that he would now offer this work to the monarch of all monarchs, the Lord God, with the plea that He give him time to finish it…
