The Sanskrit word turangalîla "means everything at once: a love song and hymn of joy, time, movement, rhythm, life and death,” wrote the composer of his work's title, adding that the symphony "is a vast polyphony of time and rhythm”. The sequence of ten movements does not form a linear plot; instead, it is a succession of surrealistic meditations on love and death. The work has three "protagonists”: the symphony orchestra, the solo piano and the ondes Martenot (an electronic instrument invented ...by Maurice Martenot in 1929). The orchestra is the scene for the most important musical events, which are coloured by the improvisatory, birdsong-like effects of the piano. The ondes Martenot participates in the musical proceedings like a divine figure thanks to its extraordinary range of voice and a sharp tone that cuts through the largest orchestras, yet retains human characteristics.
