Of the ten works for the stage written by Dvořák, a comparatively productive composer of operas, Rusalka alone met with lasting international success. Its star has unquestionably been on the rise in recent decades, having been staged in numerous major opera houses across the world. The original generic definition of the work as a "lyric fairytale” reflects the composer's chosen starting point. The story tells of a water nymph who falls for a prince and becomes human at the price of losing her vo...ice, but who is unable to overcome the trials set before her. The story of Rusalka shows strong parallels with other well-known mermaid tales. Heroines of such tales include Undine, the subject of an opera by E. T. A. Hoffmann, the Melusine of mediaeval French legend and of course Andersen's Little Mermaid. Rusalka was first performed at the National Theatre in Prague in 1901.
