Conductor: György Vashegyi Soloists: Mária Zádori – soprano, Judit Németh – alto, Julian Podger – tenor, Raimund Nolte – bass J. S. Bach: Sehet, welch eine Liebe hat uns der Vater erzeiget, BWV 64 Christen, ätzet diesen Tag, BWV 63 Christum wir sollen loben schon, BWV 121 Magnificat, BWV 243 Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the three grand cantatas for Christmas, which when performed alongside the well known Magnificat in D major makes for a great and interesting festive concert. The first can...tata of each half of the concert commences with an immense opening chorus in archaic style; these works, which allot an important role to the choir, also contain many subtle and intimate recitatives and arias. The cantata BWV 63, to be performed before the break, has the most remarkable orchestration in all of Bach’s oeuvre: he uses four trumpets simultaneously. This was the largest orchestra Bach ever composed for!
