Featuring Miklós Perényi – cello Conductor: András Keller Brahms: Academic Festival Overture, op. 80 Witold Lutoslawski: Cello Concerto Schubert: Symphony no. 9 in C major “The Great”, D. 944 Brahms wrote the Academic Festival Overture to a commission from the Boroslo University who awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1880. He employs four well known student drinking songs in piece, including Gaudeamus igitur. Perhaps the greatest twentieth century personality in Polish music, Witold L...utoslawski wrote his Cello Concerto for the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and soloist Mstislav Rostropovich. At its premiere in 1970, it was a huge success. Schubert’s Symphony in C major was written after the “unfinished” B minor. It is his last completed essay in the genre.
