Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Featuring Kristóf Baráti – violin, László Fenyô – cello Brahms: Variations on a Theme by Haydn, op. 56a Brahms: Double Concerto in A minor, op. 102 Brahms: Symphony no. 1 in C minor, op. 68 Brahms’s Haydn Variations were inspired by a newly found manuscript that was believed to be a piece for wind instruments by Haydn. Brahms’s final concerto (and also his last orchestral score) was the Double Concerto written in 1887 for cellist Robert Hausmann and violinist Jó...zsef Joachim. Brahms and Joachim had previously fallen out but their friendship was rebuilt when this work was premiered. His Symphony in C minor was rapidly nicknamed Beethoven’s Tenth after its premiere in 1876, not least because of the final movement melody consciously reminiscent of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
