Franz Schubert was only 19 years old when he began composing his Symphony No. 5 in September 1816. Completed in October, the work became the most successful and popular of the composer's early symphonies. The influence of Mozart and Haydn naturally remains unmistakable, with the third movement - the Menuetto - even quoting from Mozart's 'Great” Symphony in G minor. The joyful finale recalls the optimism and emotions of a 19-year-old youth. Classical models and the inspiration of Schubert's... melodic invention created a masterpiece with a fresh and original feel - though it was far removed from the "late” Schubert style that arrived barely a decade later. In the Lieder that follow, Schubert portrays various situations in life with the bravura and rich melodic sense of a great master of the genre.
In dimensions and content, Gustav Mahler's first three symphonies trace a great arc. After the two colossal late Romantic works that preceded it, the Symphony No. 4 seems to return to the traditions of the classical symphonic genre. In this work, the composer sets as his goal the quest for inner serenity and the peace of the afterlife. The finale of the symphony incorporates a song for soprano solo written by the composer in 1892, entitled Das himmlische Leben, which presents a vision of Heaven as imagined by a child. Compared to other works by Mahler, Symphony No. 4 requires a somewhat smaller orchestra. Following the five- and six-movement symphonies that preceded it, this work returns to the four-movement structure of his Symphony No. 1.
