Des Knaben Wunderhorn is the title of a three-volume collection of folk song lyrics published by Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim between 1806 and 1808. Gustav Mahler encountered the songs at a very young age and held them in high esteem throughout his life. "I have devoted myself heart and soul to that poetry, which is essentially different from any other kind of ‘literary poetry' and might almost be called something more like Nature and Life,” wrote Mahler. In the last decade o...f the 19th century, it was exclusively from this anthology that Mahler drew texts to set to music. At the same time, he did not always adhere to the versions published in the collection, freely supplementing the verses and combining various texts.
The composer of more than 600 Lieder, Franz Schubert remained faithful to his lyrical self even within the boundaries of the orchestral symphonic genre. Completed in 1828, his Symphony in C major is one of the most important works of the 19th century. This symphony of "heavenly length” invites the listener to experience time differently from how it is normally represented in classical music. Beyond its temporal dimensions, the tone and spiritual content of Schubert's work also point to the heavens and - with a general significance beyond this - towards the great symphonies of the Romantic period. After the composer's death, the score - which had gathered dust for a decade - was rediscovered by his great contemporary Robert Schumann. It first appeared in print in 1840, a dozen years after Schubert's passing.
