Concerto Budapest will ring in Christmas with favourite classical music hits gathered into a veritable bouquet for the occasion. Stepping up to the podium as a guest soloist will be Anna Vinnitskaya, winner of the 2007 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels and considered one of the most promising Russian pianists of the generation currently in their thirties.
Even when hearing these memorable melodies - sometimes mysteriously bewitching, other times elegant in their nobility - it is dif...ficult to imagine what kind of personal dramas surrounded the creation of these popular compositions. Tchaikovsky was inspired to write his magically colourful Christmas suite by the death of his adored sister Sasha and the memory of the happy Christmases they had shared (as shown by the character of Clara). The Nutcracker is both a memorial to fraternal love and the composer's final piece for the stage.
The clearly pronounced drama of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, his most famous such work, was written during a similarly grim period: it marks the point in his oeuvre when the Russian composer overcame the years-long creative block and nervous breakdown brought about by the failure of his Symphony No. 1. In gratitude for aiding his recovery, Rachmaninoff dedicated the piano concerto to his doctor, Nikolai Dahl.
Although we don't have such deep insight into the story of the genesis of Brahms's extremely popular Hungarian Dances, it is known for certain that they are timeless specimens of grafting a folk-like sound into art music
