Considering its huge success, it was, in March 2000, moved to Vivian Beaumont Theatre which, with its 1100 seats, counts as a Broadway theatre already. The same year it won the Tony Award for the Best Musical, while Susan Stroman, who invented and developed the show, was presented with the award for Best Choreography. John Weidmant was also nominated for the Best Book and Stromant for Best Direction. The piece is made up of three dance plays; its music is compiled of classical as well as modern works like Tchaikovsky’s Onegin, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite as well as hits by Stephane Grappelli, Robert Palmer and the Beach Boys, among others. Part One, Swinging, has its source in a Rococo painting by Fragonard (1732 – 1806). In an erotically heated scene, a servant and his master are vying for the affection of a young lady longing for adventure, while another main protagonist of the scene is a swing, offering new opportunities of function. Part two, Did you move?, is set at an elegant Italian restaurant in New York, in the 1950’s. The heroine is the wife of a Mafioso, who escapes from her empty marriage into the world of imagination. Part three, which gave the title of the whole piece, speaks also about relations, about the human desire for emotional belonging, in the language of dance. It is about a wildly successful advertising expert from Manhattan who, at a turning point of his life suddenly realises how empty and in vain the pursuit of business success is if there is no one to share the reward of his work with. In the piece, modern dance, acrobatic rock and roll as well as swing have an important role. The extremely high demanding piece is to be presented by Madách Theatre with the original choreography of Susan Stroman. The cast were selected through rehearsal by invitation. The performance features actors and dancers of Madách Theatre, leading ballet dancers of the Hungarian State Opera as well as members of KFKI Chamber Ballet. Susan Stroman is a theatre and film director, choreographer and performer. Through this production, she acclaimed the Tony Award for the Best Musical. Other works brought her a further 13 awards. Because of the special genre of Contact, a new category of Tony Award was established for her: the category of THE BEST SPECIAL THEATRICAL EVENT.
