This concert commemorates a great friendship. Liszt and Wagner were not just contemporaries: from the beginning, Liszt was an enthusiastic supporter of Wagner's innovations to musical drama, and devoted his energy to ensuring their success. Wagner, on the other hand, drew much inspiration from the compositional ideas of the forward-thinking Liszt.
Dezső Ránki is one of the greatest performers of Liszt of our time: the pianist's sophisticated virtuosity not only lives up to the technical requirements demanded by the composer, but the depth of his musical thinking also suits the sublime complexity of Liszt's works. To hear Ránki play the Piano Concerto in A major is to experience the piece's full richness - from its power and robustness to its lyricism and contemplative detail.
In addition to the piano concerto, the programme also fea...tures a true gem: the inspiringly soaring Les Préludes, the most popular of Liszt's symphonic poems. The three Wagner excerpts, even when elevated from a dramatic context, are still triumphant, richly colourful and beguilingly suggestive.
The Győr Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most outstanding ensembles in Hungarian musical life outside the capital. The year 2018 marks an important waypoint for the orchestra: in February, they celebrated the 50 year anniversary of their establishment as a professional orchestra. Since 2009, the orchestra has been directed by Kálmán Berkes, a professor at Tokyo's Musashino Academia Musicae. Berkes's intensity as a world-famous clarinetist, and the experience and inspiration he gained as a performing artist, guarantee that the Győr orchestra is worthy of preserving the traditions represented by the works of the 19-20th century conductor Hans Richter (János Richter), a great native of the city.
The concert will be preceded from 6.30 pm by a conversation entitled Prelude, where ticket holders will be invited to get to know the performing musician and the works to be performed more closely.
