The history of music has its own axioms. Among these is that Debussy was one of the greatest innovators and most influential artists history has ever known. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth, a series under the direction of Zoltán Kocsis stages various phases in the French composer’s life and artistic career. To say that the series “stages” Debussy’s oeuvre is appropriate here as these evenings, rather than taking the form of concerts in the traditional sense, are multimedia ...performances in which both music and literature play a prominent role. In this production, actors will play out scenes from real life, for example the occasion a fight between Verlaine and Rimbaud ended with the former shooting the latter. With the literary background drawn in outline, the songs in Debussy’s Ariettes oubliées (“Forgotten Songs”) cycle appear in a different light – and it is these which form the backbone of the evening’s programme. Verse which inspired the performed works will also be heard, while room is also be made for Kodály and Bartók, who had not only Hungarian folk music but also Debussy to thank for the creation of their own original styles.
