Glinka's second opera was based on the Puskin poem of the same name. For this work, the composer drew on a treasury of melodies from neighbouring eastern peoples. The work flawlessly brings melodic choral sections learned from the Italian masters to the fore, while adopting the thoughtful structure of German composers and the spectacular pomp of the major French operas. The young hero Ruslan, prepared to bravely confront any danger for the beautiful Lyudmilla, is introduced to the audience for t...he first time in the main theme of this overture. Ever since Carmina Burana – often referred to as the anthem of spring, wine and love – was premièred in Frankfurt in 1937, it has been universally adored. The composer Carl Orff also found his true self in this work, so much so that be banned his works prior to 1935, with a few exceptions, from ever being performed. “His style is a unique phenomenon that can never be replicated,” wrote music historian Péter Várnai. He places the emphasis on rhythm, using simple base chords and monotonous repetition to almost will acceptance of the text. He favours beautiful melodies that are sometimes noticeable in their simplicity. The moralistic, humorous and sometimes even indecent collection of 13th century student songs around which the opera is constructed was discovered in the early 19th century in the Benediktbeuern Abbey. The concert will also feature an outstanding visual artist in Ferenc Cakó, whose awards include the main animation prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Bear in Berlin and an Oscar nomination for his film Hamu (Ashes). He has created a live sand animation expressly for this piece of music, which the public will be able to wonder in for the first time at this gala concert celebrating Budapest's top wine festival.
