“George Frideric Handel’s masque Acis and Galatea was written in 1718, originally for a court performance at Cannons, seat of the Duke of Chandos. This “little opera” – which rightly remains one of Handel’s most popular vocal compositions to this day, and which is regarded by some musicologists as the most flawless example of the genre of pastoral opera – is one of the handful of works by Handel which has enjoyed an unbroken reputation and popularity ever since the composer’s death. It is a powe...rful illustration of the esteem in which Acis and Galatea was held by other composers that both Mozart and Mendelssohn completed their own arrangements of the work. For me, the work is particularly memorable because it was the subject of the first full concert of my career as a conductor in December 1989. Our performance follows the last version of the score completed in Handel’s lifetime, premièred in London in 1739: this version prescribes a larger performing apparatus than the original, essentially inserting the bewitching music composed 20 years earlier into the London series of operas and oratorios of Handel’s later period. To our knowledge, the London version of 1739 will be performed this evening on contemporary instruments for the first time in Hungary.” (György Vashegyi) Presented by: Sysart Kft. – Orfeo Foundation
