Zsolt Durkó's final work is performed to mark the 80th anniversary of the Hungarian composer's birth. Durkó completed his oratorio The Revelation to John in 1996, but it was only premièred two months after his death in 1997. "Durkó's work looks back and, as the most important thing, teaches us that only the essence is worth expressing. That a work should be the topical image of its creator; that the ethic of an artist is the rigour he applies to himself,” wrote the critic György Kroó. "The... composition does not reveal to us a colourfully swirling array or series of revelations, visions and fantasies, but a composer's libretto compiled from various parts of the Bible based on Gáspár Károli's translation, and thus represents a train of thought and an emotional journey.”
In the second half of the concert, the romance of ancient Greek writer Longus is brought to life in an adaptation by Ravel of marvellous orchestral colours - where the chorus, for example, is used as an instrument vocalising without words, enriching and adding drama to the orchestral palette. An unusual feature of the performance of the ballet, which premièred a century ago, is that, although the work's "abridged” version is often heard in orchestral suite form, it is only rarely staged in its entirety. Another interesting aspect of the production is that it will be performed in collaboration with the internationally acclaimed Szeged Contemporary Ballet led by Tamás Juronics.
