Once again the National Philharmonics will be directed by one of the world's greatest conductors of Italian music. It was just a year and a half ago, that Carlo Montanaro conducted the Hungarian premiere of Verdi's The Pirate, after conducting Verdi's great Requiem four years ago. He was discovered by the internationally renowned conductor Zubin Mehta, and is currently the musical director of Warsaw's Teatr Wielki, after debuting in Milan's Scala with Verdi's La Traviata. Verdi's Requiem, first ...performed 140 years ago and rich in contrast, captures all the emotions we experience when losing someone close. This work is much more than a mirror for fleeting reactions and moods: it is an encyclopaedia of mourning, the paying of respects condensed into an hour and a half, a path from darkness toward the light. It is a path that we all walk together on All Souls' Day.
