This concert features two works which, though differing in many respects, are nevertheless linked by several threads. The setting of Klopstock's Resurrection Ode is the cathartic highpoint of the monumental Symphony No. 2 by Gustav Mahler, conceived in a Christian intellectual milieu by a composer who was born into a Jewish family but later obliged to convert to Christianity. His fellow Austrian Arnold Schoenberg, who counted Mahler as a spiritual progenitor, set to music the moving recollection...s of a Jewish refugee who survived the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto in a melodrama which culminates in the most important prayer of the Jewish faith. US-based conductor James Judd has a significant history of building orchestras (chiefly the Florida Philharmonic and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra) and is recognised as an exceptional interpreter of Mahler's work, while his concerts of 20th century and contemporary music have also elicited high praise.
